Intervention

Through unity of various systems, this intervention serves as a cultural exhibition to expose implicit biases of its guests and direct a new way forward. Following a clear path of circulation, guests are guided through a curated, projection mapped series of galleries as their immediate environment expresses the emotions depicted in the tales told. Making their way through stable, direct, comforting spaces, then pushed through spaces of instability and chaos as spaces begin to dissolve into each other and finally finding peace and understanding as stability in the environment restructures. Guest experience in the intervention ends as their way of being is challenged and they are presented with their “lineage newspaper.”

The existing and prominent mullions on the buildings glass façade distorts the scale of the buildings as it provides a sense of elongation. Each floor measures only 13’ in height, to further exaggerate the perceived height of the building and therefore lengthen and provide a sense of height to each floor, I widened the columns to frame the glass façade as though long, narrow windows made up the face of the building.

Program

The program of the exhibition confines to the narrative of an immigrants experience of movement and assimilation. Guests are intimately guided through each gallery of the exhibition as their implicit biases are exposed and their personal lineage is revealed.

Unassigned space throughout the exhibition is dedicated to storage, placement of projection equipment and staff BOH.

Visualization

Materiality reflects scale, use and function throughout the intervention. At building scale, the exterior building material transitions into the interior as a rough surface to urge visitors into the center of the space. Rusted recycled steel is formed into sweeping curves as it divides spaces, combines floors and support intermediate scale objects. The interior of these forms are lined with a smooth, bright, copper chrome finish. Transitions between horizontal and vertical spaces are lined in maple to encourage visitors to walk through as materiality and scale transition from large, rough and cold to small, smooth and warm.

This boutique, highly curated and individualized exhibition makes uses of projection mapping to display and expose implicit biases of visitors. Exposure of implicit biases, along with the digital and environmental narrative visitors experience, will allow visitors to relearn set beliefs and change their overall being as they reflect, discover and solve. This intervention is empathetic and conscious of the tales being told and the physical users of the space.

Filled with abundant natural light, artificial light throughout the space is carefully placed to provide intimacy and interest and is dimmed in interior spaces to not interfere with projection maps.

Round lamps found throughout the intervention provide a warm light to draw guest in and signal an area to rest.

Designed as a self supporting structure, the lattice provides necessary function as it displays concept, emits essential light and offers areas of rest. The lattice structure gives off a cool, indirect light to illuminate the space and aid in wayfinding.
